Star Free Checking – Frequently Asked Questions

How do I open an account?

You can open an Star Free account either in your local SouthStar branch or from this website. A $100.00 opening deposit is required. View our consumer account checklist to see what we’ll need to open your new account and Switch Kit, which includes easy instructions and the forms you’ll need to switch your transactions from your current institution to SouthStar Bank.

Are there any fees, and if so where?

There is no minimum balance and no monthly maintenance fee. The only applicable charges are for non-sufficient funds (NSF)/overdraft items, in the event of insufficient funds.

How much interest do I earn?

Star Free Checking is a non-interest bearing account. If you would like an account that bears interest, please see our Gold Star Checking Account or savings account options.

What if I overdraft my account?

If you overdraw on your account balance, there is a $35 overdraft fee per item.

Where can I get an instant issue debit card for my current account?

Instant issue debit cards are available at the following SouthStar Bank branches: Brazoria, Bremond, Gonzales, Harker Heights, Hearne, Leander, Shiner, and Southwest Austin. For your protection, it is important to report a lost or stolen card immediately.
